Generate QR codes

Use MFA → Generate QR Codes to create QR codes for every student in one or more groups, then download or print them.

Who can use this page: MFA Manager, MFA Policy Manager or Global Administrator.

To create a code for just one student, use their MFA Methods tab instead.

The Generate QR Codes page, with the MFA Method, Starts From and Until fields, and the groups list.

Before you start

  • The QR Code method must be turned on in MFA Methods. If no methods are available, the page tells you.
  • The students must be in a group, such as a year level group.

Create the codes

  1. Choose the MFA Method: QR Code.
  2. Optional: set Starts From (Not Before) if the codes shouldn't work until a later date, for example the first day of term.
  3. Choose how long the codes last in Until: 6, 12, 18 or 24 months, or Custom to pick an exact date.
  4. Add one or more groups. A student in more than one of the groups only gets one code.
  5. Select Generate QR Codes.

A message shows how many codes were made.

Download or print the codes

The results after generating QR codes: download buttons at the top and a list of students with their Key Id and a Download menu.

For everyone at once:

ButtonWhat you get
Download QR Codes Text FileOne text file with every code, one per line.
Download QR Codes CSV FileA spreadsheet with each student's user ID, username, name, key ID and code. Useful for mail merges.
Generate QR Code PDFOpens the PDF window to print a card for every student. See Print QR code cards.

For one student: open the Download menu on their row to download an SVG image, text file, CSV file or PDF.

Save the codes now. You can't get them again.

The secret part of each QR code is made in your browser and is never stored by AuthCop. Once you leave this page, the codes can't be shown or downloaded again. If they are lost, generate new ones.

Keep code files safe

Anyone with a student's code file can sign in as that student (with their password). Store the text and CSV files like passwords, and delete them once the cards are printed and handed out.

How this affects sign-in

  • Each student now has a new QR Code method on their MFA Methods tab, with the start and end dates you chose.
  • Students can use the code once an access policy allows the QR Code method for them, and after a short delay while the sign-in page updates.
  • Older codes keep working. Generating new codes does not cancel old ones. To stop an old card working, remove it from the student's MFA Methods tab.
  • When a code reaches its Until date, it stops working. Generate new codes before then.
